The University of the Arts London is pleased to announce the second annual Bar-Tur Photography Award. The award was established in 2011 with the generous support of Amnon Bar-Tur in memory of the late Ann Lesley Bar-Tur (1947-1984), a talented British Artist and alumna of Chelsea College of Art and Design.

The Bar-Tur Award is open to all University of the Arts London students enrolled on any accredited degree course and to alumni who have graduated in the last ten years. It consists of prizes for both students and alumni, with two overall winners, one student and one alumnus. In addition student prize winners will be given opportunities for their individual professional development through the creation of placements and internships with leading professionals and industries in the field and some equipment support from leading manufacturers. There will also be an annual touring exhibition created and a publication of winning and shortlisted works. The award will also have a dedicated archive and an on line gallery which will act as a continuing reflection of the diversity, quality and focus of photographic practice originating from within the degree course in the colleges of The University of the Arts London.

A key focus of the Bar-Tur Award is the immense power photography has to influence the way that we understand and engage with the world around us. To help explore this power in a focused manner, there will be a different theme developed each year. An important aspect of the Award is the endorsement of the quality of work selected for the exhibition and prizes by a renowned team of nominators and world leading panel of judges who are drawn from across a wide spectrum of the professional photography industries.

The Bar-Tur Award encourages diversity of photographic approaches that reflect vibrant and continuing photographic traditions whilst at the same time embracing and revealing how our students and alumni are engaging with new forms and approaches to image making in a technologically changing world and how they respond to and represent both their own personal contexts and some of the more pressing and dominant issues of our time. The anticipated range of work will represent fine art, documentary, fashion, advertising, journalism and other genres of image making.

There will be four prizes in total, first, second and third place to be awarded to current students and a winner’s prize to alumni. In the student category there will be a First Prize of £1000, Second Prize of £750, and Third Prize of £500 and in the graduate category there will be a winner’s prize of £2000. The prizes will be awarded at the Bar-Tur Award ceremony in June/July 2012 where one of the judges will award the winning students and alumni. As well as winning prizes, the winners and shortlisted students and alumni will be profiled in the Bar-Tur Award Publication, the online gallery and biennial exhibition.

Eligibility: The Bar-Tur Award is open to all students in good standing and currently enrolled of one of University of the Arts London (UAL) accredited degree courses at Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Art & Design, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion and Wimbledon College of Art.

Graduates from one of the University’s accredited degree courses who have graduated in the last 10 years (graduated in 2002 or later) are also eligible to apply.

Opening and closing dates: The competition is open for entries from 22nd March 2012, 6pm. The closing date is 3rd May 2012, 10pm.

Entries: All entrants must declare that the photographs are their own work and free of any copyright other than their own personal copyright. A maximum of 4 images can be entered. Images that have been entered into a major competition where the results are still pending are not eligible for entry. A picture that has already won a prize (winner, runner-up or commended) in a major competition (i.e. one receiving more than 500 images) national or international, cannot be entered. Pictures will not be accepted into the competition if they are deemed inappropriate. Only still images will be accepted. No video. Entries will only be accepted via the Bar-Tur Award website. www.barturaward.com

A panel of photography experts, the ‘nominators’, will select images based upon technical skill, diversity, originality, creativity of composition and connection to the theme. Judging will be anonymous. They will assess entries and create a shortlist. All those on the shortlist will be contacted and will then have approximately 10 days to supply a high-resolution file. Failure to produce a high-resolution file within the designated time period could eliminate an entrant from the shortlist. A high profile judging panel will then select the six winners, three student and three Alumni. The winners will be notified one week before the award ceremony. All winning students should be available to attend the award ceremony. This is not applicable to the alumni winners.

The organisers cannot be held responsible for emails that do not arrive due to the entrant’s email security settings or restrictions placed by their Internet service provider. Entrants, whose images are shortlisted, will be asked to supply an extended caption. All winners will be notified by phone or email. A list of the shortlisted and winners will be published on the Bar-Tur Award website.

If your image is shortlisted, whether taken digitally or on film, you must within 10 days of notification: Provide a high resolution 300dpi file of between 2MB - 10 MB (the High Res File). Details of how to send the file will be provided at the time of notification.

Failure to provide a high resolution file within this timeframe may result in you forfeiting your prize and/or your place in the Exhibition.

During June/July 2012 there will be an award ceremony in London for the student and alumni winners. The event will be hosted by University of the Arts London and the six winning photographs will be exhibited. The prizes will be awarded by a member of the judging panel. Winning students and alumni will be invited to attend the event. Press will be invited to attend along with friends of the University.

When will I know if I have been successful? The judging process will begin soon after the closing date. If you have not heard from us by 25th May 2012 you have not been short-listed this time.

Who can enter? What about if I graduated from Byam Shaw School of Art from 2002 to 2005 or Wimbledon School of Art from 2002 – 2008? As Byam Shaw and Wimbledon College of Art (Wimbledon School of Art) are now part of the University you are still able to apply for the award.

Does it matter which course I studied at University of the Arts London? No, as long as you graduated from an accredited degree course at the University of the Arts London you are able to apply. This however does not include Artscom or short courses.

What should I do if I can’t remember or find my Student number? If you are a current student your student number is on the top of your Identity card that you use to access University buildings. It consists of 3 letters and 8 numbers. If you are an alumnus you will not be asked for your student ID number.

If I am an alumnus, do I have to submit any documentation to prove I attended an undergraduate or postgraduate course at the University? No, all student records are kept within the University and we can verify you by your name on graduation, college and course studied.

What images are eligible? You can submit any image that you consider fits within the theme.

Does it matter when a photograph was taken? We do not impose a time limit. Images taken at any time are eligible.

How many images can I enter? You can enter up to four images.

Can I enter an image that’s been entered into another competition? Yes you can, so long as it did not win a prize and that competition is over. Specifically, a picture that has already won a prize (winner, runner-up, or commended) in another photography competition cannot be entered. Images that have been entered into a major competition where the results are still pending are not eligible for entry.

How do I submit my images? The easiest way to submit still images is to use the online uploading system on our website. No entries will be accepted by post.

What images do you not accept? Double exposures, photographs which consist of more than one image in any way and images that have been digitally manipulated outside of the rules.

Can I enter an image that has been published in a magazine or other media? Yes. However, the judging criteria include originality and a widely published image may have a reduced chance of winning on these grounds.
